Tashlik- תַּשְׁלִיךְ

Around Rosh Hashanah, you might see something strange happening. People standing around the sea, ponds, lakes, streams, even puddles, emptying their pockets of crumbs into the water.

This week's Israeli tip is to participate in "tashlik" a practice that literally translates to "you will cast." After the Rosh Hashanah service in the afternoon, people head to a body of water. There, verses of repentance from the bible are recited. In the past, breadcrumbs would be thrown to fish in the bodies of water as a symbol of alleviating humanity's sin.

In modern times, people empty their pockets of crumbs and dust into the water -- try it! It's fun and cathartic. The ritual is said to be protection against the evil eye and casts one's sins away.
