Yom Kippur: Bikes in Israel

Have you ever been to a country where one day a year the highways are completely empty of cars and trucks, and instead filled with bikes?

Each year on Yom Kippur, the most widely observed Jewish holiday, in which Jews fast and spend the day in prayer, the country seems to be sleeping, as citizens turn inward and spend the day in synagogue.

Although there is no official law prohibiting driving on this day, Israelis have taken it upon themselves to refrain from activities of this sort on such an important day out of respect. Instead, bikers can be seen traveling on some of Israel’s main highways, free of the noise, exhaust, and traffic usually present!

Israel truly is a one-of-a-kind country!
